⏰ When to report

Report a dog attack as soon as possible if you have been attacked or witnessed an attack involving a person or another animal. Seek medical or veterinary treatment first if required, then report the incident to Council. Council also encourages residents to report barking dogs, roaming dogs and other animal-related concerns promptly so Rangers can investigate.

πŸ’» How to report

πŸ“ž Phone: (02) 6566 3200

πŸ’» Online Animal Reporting Portal:

Council provides information and assistance for:

  • Dog attacks
  • Barking dogs
  • Roaming and stray dogs
  • Lost and found pets
  • Responsible pet ownership
  • Other animal-related concerns.

πŸ“ Information you may need

Be prepared to provide:

  • Date and time of the incident
  • Location of the incident
  • Description of the attacking dog
  • Details of what occurred
  • Owner details (if known)
  • Any photographs, videos or witness information that may assist Council's investigation

A Council Ranger will contact you for an interview. It may be helpful to write down the details of the incident immediately after it occurs to assist with the investigation. Council investigates dog attacks by identifying the owner and speaking with witnesses where possible.

🚨 Emergency

If there is an immediate threat to life or a serious emergency, call 000.

If a person has received life-threatening injuries, call 000 for ambulance and police assistance immediately. Kempsey Shire Council does not provide an after-hours Ranger service for animal-related issues. For dog attacks outside business hours, contact NSW Police and report the incident to Council as soon as possible.

🩷 Pink for Leasy Tip

Even if the dog has left the area or no one was injured, reporting roaming or aggressive dog behaviour can help councils identify repeat incidents and intervene before someone or another animal is seriously harmed.

Every report contributes to a clearer picture of what's happening in our communities and supports safer outcomes for both people and companion animals.

πŸ“’ Still need help?

If you've reported ongoing concerns without resolution, or you've experienced:

The information you share helps us identify patterns across NSW and advocate for improvements to education, legislation, reporting systems and community safety.

πŸ›‘οΈ Prevention Starts Before an Attack Occurs

Reporting concerns early, including roaming dogs, repeated escapes, aggressive behaviour or suspected breaches of companion animal laws, may help prevent future incidents.

Together, we can build safer communities for both people and companion animals.
